A Rigged Outcome
The decision to start Daryll Clark over Pat Devlin was made last December. That is when Jay Paterno started spouting off about this new ‘spread HD’ and it’s doubtful Devlin was given a fair shake. The only offense the Son has had success with is 05, so he’s trying to get as close to M-Rob as possible. The problem may be that with an experienced o-line, experienced receivers, and a two-headed monster in the backfield, this talent lends itself to a more traditional ‘drop back’ style of offense. If you haven’t recruited certain types of players to run a certain type of offense, you’re putting a square peg... Read more »
A Great Debate: The Two Quarterback System
Early reports from Penn State’s double sessions indicate that Darryl Clark and Pat Devlin continue to split first team reps at the helm of the PSU offense. That got me thinking about two things: 1. When was the last time this happened at PSU? 2. When we look at the national champions across this decade, how many teams significantly split time? So, if my memory serves me correctly, Rashard Casey split time with Kevin Thompson in 1999. As you likely recall, that team came into the season with great expectations: LaVar Arrington on the cover of SI proclaiming Penn State the best team in the country. The season fell apart in a last second... Read more »
The Last Boring Week — and Some Vindication
Monday, August 4, 2008 I want to let it go, but the entry last week stirred up some nice conversation. We’re under four weeks now, and that means the first practices of the year kick off this week. We hope it also means that it’s time to turn the page. Turn it away from the stack of the on-field and off-field disappointments. I want to read all the articles I can—everything PSU related I can get my hands on, but there really hasn’t been many 2008 football related stories. It’s one of the worst weeks of... Read more »
Did ESPN Distort and Sensationalize Penn State Problems?
(Sunday, July 27 2008) – Tomorrow, we’ll be just 32 days away from the first game of 2008, but the problems of 2007 continue to haunt Nittany Nation. And no, I’m not talking about Anthony Morelli. Today’s report on ESPN’s sensationalized show Outside the Lines, hosted by Bill O’Reilly, um I mean Bob Ley, lambasted Paterno and Penn State. There is little doubt all alumni and fans feel embarrassed about the flurry of off-field issues that Penn State felt last year. However, this piece combined skewed statistics, interviews with long-time haters (Ron Bracken), and a not-so-flattering interview with Paterno as, well,... Read more »
